EAST LANSING, Mich. -- No. 24 Northwestern clinched its fifteenth win of the spring by topping Michigan State 6-1 Friday afternoon. NU improved to 15-7 on the season and 4-2 in the Big Ten.
The 'Cats took doubles wins on the two upper courts to capture the first point of the match. Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer overcame Gijs Linders and Brett Forman 8-1 at No. 2. At No. 1, 69th-ranked Alex Pasareanu and Sam Shropshire knocked off 17th-ranked Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane 8-6.
In singles play, Jadun evened the score with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Konrad Zieba at No. 3. However, Alp Horoz put Northwestern up for good at No. 6, where he defeated Michael Dube 6-4, 6-2.
No. 92 Shropshire then bested Gijs Linders 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 for his fourth straight singles win. Baev locked the Northwestern victory at No. 5, beating Mac Roy 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
With the decision determined, Logan Staggs won his match by retirement at No. 4, and Kirchheimer completed play at No. 2. The 124th-ranked Wildcat came back from a one set deficit to prevail 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 and round out the final score of 6-1.
Northwestern continues to Ann Arbor tomorrow to play Michigan at noon.
