URBANA, Ill. -- Fourth-seeded No. 30 Northwestern's Big Ten Tournament run came to an end in the semifinals Saturday afternoon, as top-seeded No. 4 Illinois overcame the `Cats 4-0. NU is now 20-9 on the season.
The Illini captured the doubles point with wins on courts 1 and 3. 68th-ranked Jared Hiltzik and Tim Kopinski beat 58th-ranked Sam Shropshire and Alex Pasareanu 8-4 at No. 1, and Aron Hiltzik and Ross Guignon bested Alp Horoz and Mihir Kumar 8-6 at No. 3.
In singles play, No. 66 Aleks Vukic defeated Fedor Baev 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 on court 5 to increase the Illini advantage to 2-0. No. 24 Jared Hiltzik then topped No. 42 Sam Shropshire 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 for Illinois's third point.
No. 45 Farris Gosea sealed the Illini win with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Strong Kirchheimer at No. 2.
When the match concluded, the Wildcats were in tough battles on the remaining courts. Konrad Zieba and Alp Horoz had achieved first set wins at No. 3 and 6 respectively, and Logan Staggs was tied 3-3 in the second frame.
Northwestern now awaits an NCAA tournament bid, which will be announced on Tuesday, Apr. 28.
