ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 24 Northwestern wrapped a winning weekend in Michigan with a 5-2 victory over the Wolverines. The Wildcats' fourth straight victory puts them at 16-7 on the season and 5-2 in the Big Ten.
The `Cats took doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to secure the lead-off point. No. 69 Alex Pasareanu and Sam Shropshire beat their second ranked opponent of the weekend and third of the season on court 1, topping No. 67 Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu 8-3.
Mihir Kumar and Alp Horoz improved to 12-3 on the season with an 8-6 victory over Tyler Gardiner and Davis Crocker at No. 3.
Michigan's Runhao Hua knotted the score 1-1 at No. 3 singles, where he bested Konrad Zieba 6-0, 6-3.
However, the ranked Wildcats on courts 1 and 2 added two more points to reinstate Northwestern's lead. No. 92 Shropshire achieved his fifth consecutive win over Michael Zhu 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, and No. 124 Kirchheimer beat Alex Petrone 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2.
Horoz captured the deciding point at No. 6, defeating Carter Lin 6-3, 6-4. He, Baev, and Kirchheimer have now won four in a row.
The remaining matches substituted tiebreakers for third sets. Fedor Baev gave the `Cats a fifth point with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (13-11) win over Davis Crocker at No. 5, but Logan Staggs fell 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9) to Alex Knight at No. 4.
Northwestern returns to Evanston for a busy home-stand and Senior Day next weekend. The `Cats host Nebraska on Friday, Apr. 10 at 2:30 p.m. before a double-header on Sunday, Apr. 12 against Iowa at noon and Detroit at 7 p.m.
