EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman Logan Staggs is the Big Ten Athlete of the Week after achieving three singles victories this past weekend. It is the first such conference honor of his career, and the second for the Wildcats this season. Strong Kirchheimer won the award three weeks ago on Jan. 20.
Northwestern completed an undefeated home-stand last weekend with three team victories: No. 45 Boise State (7-0), No. 30 Harvard (4-3), and Valparaiso (6-1). Staggs reflected this accomplishment with a 3-0 singles record of his own, all playing at No. 3.
Beginning on Friday vs. Boise State, the freshman topped Toby Mitchell. 6-3, 6-2.
Against Harvard on Sunday, he defeated No. 86 Sebastian Beltrame 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). The win gave Northwestern its first point of the match, and marked Staggs's second victory over a ranked opponent this season.
Staggs concluded his winning weekend on Sunday night, when he bested Valparaiso's Charlie Ermhardt 6-3, 6-2.
The team's only freshman is currently 5-4 in dual season singles.
After a break this weekend, the 'Cats open Big Ten competition on Friday, Feb. 20 at Illinois with a 6 p.m. match. They then travel to Cornell the following Sunday for a 10 a.m. contest.
