TULSA, Okla. -- Northwestern continues to play through the ITA All-American Championships this week, and Monday saw two Wildcats – sophomore Sam Shropshire and freshman Logan Staggs – advance into the second round of qualifying singles.

In today's first round, preseason No. 78 Shropshire dropped a tight first frame but surged back to prevail 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-3 over Texas's Nick Naumann. Staggs breezed through his first set and beat University of Washington's Emmett Egger 6-0, 6-3.

Sophomore Strong Kirchheimer also competed in the first round but fell to Gordon Watson of Florida 7-6 (4), 6-3. He was able to bounce back in the consolation round though and get a 6-2, 6-2 victory over LSU's Justin Butsch.

On Tuesday, Shropshire will face Kevin Farin from the University of Oregon, and Staggs will meet Tulsa's Dylan McCloskey.

Doubles play also kicks off tomorrow. Junior Mihir Kumar and Staggs will team up to play Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman of UTSA, and junior Fedor Baev and Shropshire will take on Francisco Dias and Julius Tverijonas from George Washington. Kumar and Staggs have earned an ITA Preseason Doubles ranking of No. 44.
