Rob Coons, Northwestern’s Senior Director of Broadcast Operations and the school's Big Ten Network liaison, joined the Wildcats in 2009. Responsible for overseeing video production for athletics, Coons has served as both a director and producer for Northwestern’s stadium video boards, as well as coordinated live streaming productions for Big Ten Network and Northwestern’s website.
In 2011, Coons created and produced television shows for the football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, The Pat Fitzgerald Show and Wildcat Fastbreak. He currently executive produces The Foundation, Northwestern’s behind-the-scenes TV show that airs on NBC Sports Chicago and BTN. Since it's debut in 2015, The Foundation has received numerous awards, including winning an EMMY Award in 2017 and a being a three-time finalist for the College Sports Media Awards from NACDA/SVG, with a win in 2016.
In 2014, he helped design and integrate Northwestern’s first video control room as the department added video boards to Welsh-Ryan Arena and updated technology at Ryan Field. Since that first integration, he has overseen technology builds and upgrades to the Walter Athletics Center, Ryan Fieldhouse, and the 2017-18 Welsh-Ryan Arena renovation project.
A native of Elm Grove, Wis., Coons graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism and also holds a masters of sports administration degree from Northwestern. He performed various sports anchor/reporter duties at KOMU-TV in Columbia, Mo., KVRR-TV in Fargo, N.D., and WMBD-TV in Peoria, Ill., and is the winner of three different broadcasting awards from North Dakota and Illinois professional organizations. As a play-by-play announcer, he has called games for Big Ten Network and Studio N, and was the lead voice for the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women’s Soccer League.
Coons also has experience in athletic communications with Northwestern women’s soccer program, the Red Stars, Milwaukee Brewers and Mizzou athletics.
