Nancy Tierney was hired as Northwestern's Associate Director of Fitness and Wellness in August of 1987. Tierney oversees and manages all fitness and wellness staff, contractors, programming, services, and special events for students, faculty, staff and Henry Crown Sports Pavilion members. During her time at Northwestern, Tierney has established and administered countless programs, services, and events that served a vast number of students, members, and the university community, from group exercise, fitness assessments, personal training, and massage therapy to lunch and learn series, sound meditations, cardiac rehabilitation phase III, perinatal fitness, and family programming. Tierney is also responsible for recommending and implementing capital and auxiliary equipment improvements in Recreation facilities.
Tierney is actively involved in Wildcat Welcome each fall, and was the chair of the University’s Health and Benefits Fair (Evanston campus) 1994-2020. Charged with enhancing the overall fitness and wellness of the University community, Tierney serves on several committees and works closely with Student Affairs, Human Resources, Kellogg, University Library, Northwestern Dining, the Center for Audiology, Speech, Language and Learning, Feinberg, and others - to provide programming and services that support and enhance the physical, social, and emotional well-being of students, faculty and staff.
A Muncie, Indiana, native, Tierney graduated from Purdue University with a degree in exercise science. In 1987, she earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Ball State University. Prior to coming to Northwestern, Tierney worked at the Institute for Fitness and Sport in Indianapolis, Indiana. She currently resides in Winnetka.
