Northwestern Falls at Washington in Series Opener

SEATTLE – Northwestern dropped its series opener at Washington, 7-2 on Friday night at Husky Ballpark.

INF Owen McElfatrick led off the game with a solo home run, his fourth of the season, to put Northwestern (8-13-1, 2-5 Big Ten) up 1-0. McElfatrick moves into fourth in program history with 28 home runs.

INF Jack Counsell recorded his third multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a run.

Washington (11-14, 5-5 Big Ten) responded with three runs in the bottom of the first and led for the remainder of the game. The Huskies added three in the third and one in the sixth to stretch their lead to 7-1.

C Shane Hofstadler recorded his first RBI in a Wildcat uniform in the eighth, doubling home INF Jack Counsell for the final run of the game.

RHP Garrett Shearer (0-2) allowed three runs on three hits and two walks, fanning three batters in 1.1 innings pitched.

Saturday's game is slated for 9 p.m. CT at Husky Ballpark. RHP Matt Kouser is scheduled to get the start for the Wildcats, with RHP Gunnar Nichols slated to start for the Huskies.
