'Cats Sweep Doubleheader Against IU Indy and Cleveland State

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis picked up a pair of victories on Saturday in Combe Tennis Center, defeating IU Indy 4-0 in the morning match before downing Cleveland State 5-2 in the nightcap.

The day's action began with a doubles point for the 'Cats, who took two of three matches against IU Indy. The duos of Greyson Casey and Carter Pate, and Ethan Schiffman and Cooper Han, both won matches to put Northwestern up 1-0 heading to singles.

Pate continued his day with another victory in the singles portion, putting away his match at the No. 1 position quickly, 6-0, 6-2. He was followed by Cyrus Mahjoob, who defeated his opponent at the No. 2 spot in straight sets as well, 6-2, 6-3. The clincher came from Vincent Yang at No. 6 singles, who locked up the 4-0 Northwestern victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

In the evening match, the 'Cats once again put themselves up early by capturing the doubles point against Cleveland State. Schiffman and Han won their second doubles decision of the day, 6-2. Casey and Pate provided a 6-2 victory as well to give Northwestern their second doubles point of the day.

In the singles portion, Pate finished up a 4-0 day with another win in straight sets. He took down Nico Jamison 6-0, 6-2. Next up, first-year Han secured the first singles victory of his collegiate career with a win at No. 6, defeating Tristan Stine 6-4, 6-1 to put the 'Cats on the brink. The deciding point came from Schiffman, who clinched victory for Northwestern with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 singles.

After the match had been decided, Yang added on with a super-tiebreak win, defeating Cole Chappell 6-2, 2-6, [10-4] to close out a 5-2 win for the 'Cats.

One doubleheader sweep behind them, Northwestern will host another pair of opponents at Combe next Sunday, Feb. 1. First, however, they'll visit the Crimson Tide for their first road match of dual season. Action from Tuscaloosa will begin at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, Jan. 30.
