EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern secured a crucial 3-0 victory against Nebraska on Sunday at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium. Senior midfielder Caterina Regazzoni, junior midfielder Sarah O'Donnell and sophomore forward Kennedy Roesch scored in the win.
"We've been playing really well in a lot of our games and just haven't been getting the results," O'Donnell said. "It's really good momentum going forward to come off a win."
Coach Michael Moynihan's squad ultimately outshot the Cornhuskers (5-3-5, 0-3-3 Big Ten) 13-7.
"We did a much better job today getting better numbers into the box, keeping our shots on target and getting second chances," Moynihan said. "[We put] emphasis on trying to get behind them. That paid off. There were more goals to be had, but it feels good to get a few."
First-year goalkeeper Nyamma Nelson recorded her seventh clean sheet of 2025, giving her sole ownership of the sixth-most shutouts in a single season in program history, as well as the third most among first-year goalkeepers.
Northwestern looked to push the pace from the opening kickoff, earning a corner kick just 69 seconds into the match. Regazzoni rattled off a pair of shots within the first 15 minutes of action, forcing UNL goalkeeper Cece Villa into an early save.
In the 24th minute, sophomore forward Kennedy Roesch fired a goalbound effort that the Cornhuskers could only manage to clear off the line as far as Regazzoni. The Swiss international clinically found the back of the net to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0.
"My teammates do the work — they put the ball in the circle," Regazzoni said. "My job is to be ready in the box. If I get on the end of those, honestly, you never know what's going to happen."
As Northwestern's backline neutralized the visiting offense, which didn't tally a single first-half shot on goal, the 'Cats continued to search for a second goal. Regazzoni nearly doubled her tally in the 33rd minute, but Villa recorded a vital save.
With just five minutes remaining in the first half, first-year midfielder Keira Kemmerley lofted a long ball into O'Donnell's path. Opening up onto her left foot, O'Donnell blasted a one-timed effort into the bottom right corner. The play marked O'Donnell's first career goal, which solidified a 2-0 halftime lead for the Wildcats.
"It felt like a reward for all the work I've put in, especially through pain and adversity," O'Donnell said. "To finally get that goal was pretty special."
The visitors, in search of a tide-shifting goal, applied a higher press as the match passed the hour mark. Nebraska nearly cut into the deficit in the 63rd minute, but Carson Bohonek's effort beamed off the crossbar and back into play.
After a period of visiting attacking inroads that included Nelson's first save in the 76th minute, Roesch slotted home her fifth goal of the season off assists from Keira Wagner and Maddie Finnerty to extend the lead to 3-0.
In the closing minutes, Northwestern held firm to secure a vital three points in the hunt for postseason contention.
"Finally getting some goals and just the presence we had in front of goal to capitalize, we just have to keep building on that," Moynihan said. "Every game in the Big Ten is tough. You see it in the standings — there's just quite a logjam. We have to approach it one game at a time and hopefully bring the same intensity in front."
The Wildcats will return to action in Bloomington, Ind., on Thursday, when they'll take on Indiana at 6:30 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on B1G+.
