Wildcats Fall to Iowa

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern fell 7-1 to Iowa on Saturday, April 5 at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park. 

Iowa (19-9, 11-2 Big Ten) drew first blood in the top of the first when LF Ben Wilmes led off the game with a double and came around to score on a pair of productive Hawkeye outs, scoring on an RBI groundout by DH Reese Moore.

The Wildcats (13-15, 5-6 Big Ten) punched back, tying the game in the bottom of the fourth. 1B Trent Liolios doubled with two outs and came around to score on an RBI single by SS Ryan Kucherak.

Iowa went back ahead with three runs in the top of the sixth, and padded its lead with a solo home run by CF Miles Risley and a two-run home run by 1B Blake Guerin to claim the 7-1 win.

Making his first career Big Ten start, DH Zach Carlson recorded the first multi-hit game of his career, recording base hits in the fifth and seventh innings.

RHP Aaron Savary (5-0) earned the win for Iowa, working 6.0 innings of one-run ball, striking out seven and allowing three hits and walking two.. RHP Anthony Watts earned his fifth save of the season in 3.0 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits.

RHP Sam Hliboki was strong in 5.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out four and walking a pair. LHP Crawford Wade (2-4) allowed six runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking two in 4.0 innings pitched.
