EVANSTON, Ill. – Another undefeated week by Northwestern lacrosse netted Madison Taylor and Sammy White weekly awards from the Big Ten Conference.
Taylor earned her third-straight Offensive Player of the Week nod while Sammy White snagged Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in the past three weeks.
Taylor netted six goals in both games over the past week to finish the regular season with an NCAA-best 83. Against Michigan, Taylor struck for a pair of goals in the second, the latter of which put NU ahead for the first time, 4-3. With a 7-4 lead at halftime, Taylor erupted in the third, scoring three of the 'Cats next four goals to set the tone before initiating a running clock with her sixth of the evening as Northwestern won its third-straight Big Ten title. She put up another nine points in the regular-season finale at Ohio State, scoring once in both the first and second quarters to keep the Buckeyes at bay. She later scored three-straight in the third quarter and helped put the game away with her sixth early in the fourth. Taylor has scored six or more goals in a game eight times this season, including each of her last three outings. She earned conference weekly awards honors for the third straight week and the sixth time this season.
White headlined an absolutely dominant defensive performance against No. 13 Michigan that allowed No. 3 Northwestern to lock up a Big Ten title. The senior defender caused four turnovers and scooped up three ground balls, but it was the overall defensive output that showed up. After NU fell behind 3-0 in the first quarter, the Wildcats held the Wolveriners to just one goal in the next 38:13 as the 'Cats outscored them 15-1 in an eventual 15-6 victory. White did a little bit of everything in Saturday's season finale at Ohio State, picking up two ground balls and causing two turnovers while snagging eight draw controls and even scoring a goal in a 20-12 win. During the Wildcats' six-game winning streak, White has helped hold opponents to a mere 47 goals (7.88 per game). She earned her third Defensive Player of the Week award this season.
No. 1-seed Northwestern returns to action on Friday, April 25, at 4 p.m. CT when it begins play in the Big Ten Tournament against either No. 4-seed Penn State or No.5-seed Johns Hopkins.
