ROSEMONT, Ill. – Northwestern junior forward Nick Martinelli has been named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Martinelli, the Big Ten's leading scorer this season, averaging 19.9 points per game, posted averages of 22.5 points (47.1% fg) and 7.0 rebounds per game for the week as the Wildcats went 2-0.
In a 75-63 road win at Minnesota, Martinelli logged 29 points on 11-for-20 shooting (3-for-5 3fg) with five rebounds. He recorded the most points by a Northwestern forward in a conference game since John Shurna had 29 against Indiana in 2012.
Later in the week, the Glenview, Ill. product nearly reached a double-double by registering 16 points and nine rebounds in a 68-57 home victory over Iowa. He was part of a Northwestern defense which held the Hawkeyes to season-lows in points and field goal percentage (36.2%).
The junior previously won the award after the season's first week when he averaged 29.0 points and 12.0 rebounds, becoming the Big Ten's first player to record 25+ points and 10+ rebounds in each of the first two games of a season.
The Wildcats host UCLA for Senior Night tonight, March 3 at 8 p.m. CT. The game will air on FS1 and ESPN 1000 WMVP.
