No. 5 Northwestern Comes Away With Three Wins At Elite Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 19, 2024) – No. 5 Northwestern fencing tallied three wins, two of which came over ranked foes, as it competed at the Elite Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa. this past Sunday.
 
After falling to event host No. 7 Penn by a 17-10 margin in its opening dual of the day, Northwestern bounced back with a resounding 20-7 win over No. 11 Temple.  The 'Cats swept all three weapons against the Owls, an effort highlighted by a perfect 9-0 showing by its epee squad that consisted of Hanna Lipthay, Amanda Pirkowski, and Karen Wang.  Wang enjoyed an outstanding weekend, leading the Wildcat epeeists with nine individual victories.
 
Northwestern followed up its victory against Temple with its second top-10 win of the young campaign, downing No. 8 Cornell by a 17-10 final.  The epee squad again led the attack in the win, with both Wang and Anna Damratoski finishing 3-0 as part of an 8-1 triumph in the weapon. 
 
In their penultimate dual of the day, the 'Cats cruised to an 18-9 win against North Carolina.  Rowan Park posted a spotless 3-0 mark in the epee as part of a 7-2 victory, while both Adele Bois and Natalie Shearer matched her effort in the sabre, where the 'Cats prevailed by an identical scoreline.  Northwestern wrapped up its stay in the City of Brotherly Love with a narrow 15-12 setback to No. 4 Princeton.
