The win marked Northwestern's first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 20 Rutgers 2-1 on October 30, 2022 in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals.

How it Happened

Both teams played to a scoreless first half, with the Hokies outshooting NU 4-3 over the first 45 minutes of action. The game opened up in the second half, with the 'Cats creating a dangerous chance before Hokie goalkeeper Lauren Hargrove extended to make a sensational save on a Kennedy Roesch shot in the 52nd minute.

The Wildcats continued to apply pressure, earning a corner kick in the game's 65th minute. Josie Aulicino's corner kick found Emma Phillips at the back post, who headed back to Caterina Regazzoni near the top of the six-yard box. Regazzoni's header deflected into the back of the net for the game's only goal.
