EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 1 Northwestern kicked off its 2024 season with a commanding 3-0 victory over the University of Maine on Friday at Lakeside Field. The Wildcats showcased their dominance from start to finish, outshooting the Black Bears 23-3 and displaying a well-rounded team effort.

Sophomore forward Olivia Bent-Cole spearheaded the Wildcats' attack, netting two unassisted goals. Her first came with 4:24 left in the second quarter, breaking the deadlock and setting the tone for the rest of the match. She struck again with 10:16 left in the third quarter, further solidifying Northwestern's control. Bent-Cole, who was the team's third-leading scorer last season with 10 goals, is already proving to be a critical offensive asset as she steps into a more prominent role this year.

Sophomore transfer Ashley Sessa made an immediate impact in her debut as a Wildcat, opening the scoring just before the end of the first quarter with a goal at the 48-second mark. Sessa's relentless pressure on Maine's defense was evident as she recorded a team-high eight shots. Graduate student Lauren Wadas also played a crucial role, contributing five shots, three of which were on target and posed serious threats to the Black Bears' defense.

Northwestern's defense was equally impressive, stifling Maine's offense and limiting them to just three shots throughout the game. The Black Bears didn't manage their first shot until the final two minutes of the third quarter, a testament to the Wildcats' dominant control of possession.

In the goal, graduate goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz continued her stellar form, securing her first shutout of the season with two saves. Skubisz, the 2023 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, was a force last season with 13 shutouts and has been recognized as one of the 2024 Big Ten Players to Watch, alongside Sessa and senior Maddie Zimmer.

The Wildcats are set to return to Lakeside Field on Sunday, where they will face UMass at noon CT, looking to build on their strong start and maintain their momentum.
