Five ‘Cats Named To WGCA All-American Scholar Team

2023-24 WGCA All-American Scholars Opens in a new window
EVANSTON, Ill. (July 1, 2024) – Five members of the Northwestern University women's golf team have been selected as All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA), the organization announced on Monday.

The Wildcats' quintet of honorees, a mark which tied for third amongst Big Ten Conference institutions, included Jennifer Cai (Irvine, Calif./Sage Hill School), Jieni Li (Hangzhou, China), Lauryn Nguyen (Seattle, Wash./West Seattle), Jiayi Wang (Shanghai, China), and Ashley Yun (West Covina, Calif./Walnut).

A total of 1,497 women's collegiate golfers were recognized on the WGCA All-American Scholar Team.  The criteria for selection are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics, with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 required.

Led by two-time reigning Big Ten Head Coach of the Year Emily Fletcher and assistant coach Beth Miller, Northwestern enjoyed a banner 2023-24 season.  After winning a pair of events during a regular season slate in which it finished no lower than fourth in all but one event, the Wildcats secured the program's 10th bid to the NCAA Women's Golf Championships by virtue of a fourth-place finish at the NCAA East Lansing Regional.  Cai and Nguyen both received First Team All-Big Ten distinction, while Li and Yun earned Second Team All-Big Ten accolades.  Yun also became the third straight Northwestern golfer to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
