‘Cats Make First Cut, Move On At NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 19, 2024) – Battling windy conditions, the Northwestern University women's golf team comfortably cleared the first cut of the 2024 NCAA Women's Golf Championships today in Carlsbad, Calif.

The Wildcats tallied a 295 during third-round action, an effort which saw Northwestern move up to fifth in the team race at 873 (285-293-295) and close the day 16 shots in front of the cut line to advance on to Monday's fourth round of stroke play.
 
Texas A&M (281-284-289=854) leads Stanford (285-285-285) by just one stroke in the team race, while the Aggies' Adela Cernousek fired her third straight four-under-par round of 68 to extend her advantage in the race for the individual championship with a 12-under 204 (68-68-68).
 

Ashley Yun again led the way for the 'Cats on the Champions Course (par 72; 6,330 yards) at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.  The West Covina, Calif. native carded her third consecutive round under par, finishing the day with a team-best five birdies as part of a one-under-par 71.  Yun is currently part of a six-way tie for sixth with a four-under 212 (71-70-71) and finds herself just one stroke shy of a spot in the top three.
 
The pairing of Lauryn Nguyen and Jiayi Wang reside in a tie for 64th at 224. Nguyen (77-74-73) put together her low round of the week, handing in a one-over 73, while Wang (72-77-75) shot a three-over 75. 
 
Following a third-round 76, Jieni Li is just a shot outside a spot in the top 25, currently sitting tied for 27th with a three-over 219 (71-72-76).  Jennifer Cai (T-106th) recorded a 78 to bring her total to the week for 230 (71-81-78).
 
Northwestern now turns its attention to the fourth and final round of stroke play on Monday.  The Wildcats will be paired with Clemson and UCLA, with tee times slated from 1:25 p.m. (CT) off hole one.  GOLF Channel and Peacock will provide live coverage beginning at 5 p.m. (CT).  Following Monday's fourth round, the top eight teams in the team standings will advance on to match play, which begins on Tuesday morning.
