Wildcat Pitching Shines in 3-1 Win at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northwestern allowed just one run on seven hits in Sunday's series finale, stranding 12 Buckeyes on base in a 3-1 victory at Bill Davis Stadium.

OSU (26-23, 10-11 Big Ten) took an early lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single through the right side by Josh Stevenson, scoring Ryan Miller to draw first blood.

Northwestern (16-31, 3-18 Big Ten) responded immediately with a pair in the top of the third. Owen McElfatrick doubled home Griffin Arnone to tie the game at one apiece, before Bennett Markinson's sacrifice fly gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats added on to the lead, taking a 3-1 lead on a solo shot deep to right field by Trent Liolios.

After a solid start by Matt McClure, who allowed one run on four hits in 4.0 innings pitched, fanning four and walking two, Luke Benneche tossed 1.2 scoreless innings.

Nolan Morr (2-4) earned the win, striking out three while allowing zero hits and zero runs in 2.1 innings of action.

Garrett Shearer earned his third save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth with a pair of flyouts and a lineout to close out the game.

Gavin Devooght (2-3) is credited with the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out six.

Northwestern returns to action on Tuesday, May 14 to square off with Valparaiso at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park at 3:30 p.m. CT, kicking off its final homestand of the regular season.
