Three Wildcats Qualify For NCAA Wrestling Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. (March 13, 2024) – Northwestern wrestling has secured three bids to the NCAA Wrestling Championships, it was announced on Wednesday.  The 2024 edition of the national meet will take place March 21-23 inside T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Trevor Chumbley (157 pounds) and Maxx Mayfield (165 pounds) will both appear on the national stage for a second consecutive year, while Evan Bates (197 pounds) will make his NCAA Championships debut.

In additional to Northwestern's trio of qualifiers, Troy Fisher has been named the second alternate at 184 pounds.

Seeds for each Northwestern participant, which were released on Wednesday evening by the NCAA, follow.

157 lbs – No. 25 Trevor Chumbley
165 lbs – No. 31 Maxx Mayfield
197 lbs – No. 33 Evan Bates

Chumbley enters the NCAA Championships coming off an eighth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships this past weekend in College Park, Md.  The St. Charles, Ill. native has eight bonus-point victories to his name this season as part of a 17-11 overall record.

Mayfield, who sits at 15-15 on the year, picked up three wins at the conference meet.  None of those were bigger than a thrilling 5-3 win over Caleb Fish (Michigan State) that saw the Lincoln, Neb. product come up with the deciding takedown in the closing seconds to punch his postseason ticket.

Out of Chesterton, Ind., Bates (12-13) received an at-large nod after falling just a win shy of qualifying for the national meet during the 2022-23 season.  He closed the regular season with wins in three of his final four outings before adding two wins at the Big Ten Championships en route to an eighth-place finish of his own.

The ESPN family of networks will provide comprehensive coverage of the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships, beginning with the event's First Round on Thursday, March 21 at 11 a.m. on ESPNU.  Championship matches at each weight class will feature on ESPN at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.
