EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern women's tennis remains perfect at home after sweeping a doubleheader against Brown and Northern Illinois at Combe Tennis Center on Sunday. The 'Cats claimed a 5-3 victory over the Bears in the afternoon before defeating the Huskies 4-0 to complete their day.
The Wildcats (7-3) opened the day with two dominant doubles victories; Christina Hand and Sydney Pratt didn't drop a single game at #2 doubles, defeating their opponents 6-0. Justine Leong and Neena Feldman backed that up with a 6-1 victory over the nation's No. 34 doubles duo, Lindsey Hofflander and Phoebe Peus.
Moving on the singles action, Pratt continued her dominance with another 6-0 set to open her match. She defeated Brown's Vivian Miller 6-0, 6-4 at the fourth position. Feldman picked up the 'Cats' third point of the day from #6 singles, where she won 6-4, 7-5 to move to 3-0 individually this season.
Maria Shusharina provided the clincher, winning a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 match over Brown's Ali Benedetto to give Northwestern their fourth point. After that, Hand cleaned up a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) tiebreak victory of her own to bring the final score to 5-2.
The evening match also began with the doubles point going to the 'Cats. Shusharina combined with Britany Lau for a clean 6-0 victory at the third position, then Hand and Pratt moved to 2-0 on the day with a 6-1 victory at #2.
Lau's night concluded nearly perfect with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over NIU's Angelica Ross. Her win was followed by Jennifer Riester's fourth singles victory of the year as she defeated Jenna Horne 6-2, 6-1 at #5. The final point of the day was won by Shusharina; she won 6-1, 6-3 to wrap up the match in favor of the 'Cats, 4-0.
Next up for Northwestern, they'll head to Fayetteville to play Kansas and Arkansas next weekend. The 'Cats will face the Jayhawks next Saturday at noon before taking on the Razorbacks at noon on Sunday.
