MADISON, Wis. (February 2, 2024) – Three Wildcats tallied victories as Northwestern (0-5, 0-4 B1G) dropped a 30-12 decision to host Wisconsin (7-4, 1-3 B1G) this evening inside the UW Field House in Madison, Wis.
Trevor Chumbley got the Wildcats on the board with authority in his 157-pound clash against Cody Goebel. The St. Charles, Ill. native started fast, putting up a pair of first-period takedowns to jump in front, 6-2. Chumbley kept his foot on the accelerator as time wore on, securing his third win of the year by technical fall, 20-5, with just under a minute remaining in the third period.
The paring of Evan Bates (197 pounds) and Jack Jessen (285 pounds) took Chumbley's lead later on the evening, both opening up sizeable advantages en route to collecting their first Big Ten wins at their respective weight classes.
Matching up with Josh Otto, Bates piled up over two minutes of riding time in a 9-2 decision victory. He recorded takedowns in both the first and third periods on the way to his seventh win of 2023-24.
Jessen turned in an impressive showing to close out the night against Gannon Rosenfeld. Making just his sixth career appearance at heavyweight, Jessen opened up a 4-0 lead courtesy of a second-period takedown before adding three points on a near fall to take a 7-0 edge into the third period. He added another takedown in the final frame to help secure an 11-1 major decision.
