EVANSTON, Ill. (November 10, 2023) – Northwestern wrestling raises the curtain on its 2023-24 on Saturday when it heads north to East Lansing, Mich. for the Michigan State Open.
Action inside Jenison Field House on the campus of Michigan State University is scheduled to get underway at 8:30 a.m. (CT), with action in both the open division and freshman/sophomore division. FloWrestling will provide live coverage throughout the day.
THE FIELD
Northwestern, which is ranked No. 24 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Coaches Poll, will have the opportunity to see how it stacks up against five Big Ten Conference foes, with host Michigan State, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin slated to be in action. Central Michigan, Clarion, Northern Illinois, and Oklahoma are also scheduled to be part of the 17-team field.
2023-24 PREVIEW
Piloted by ninth-year head coach Matt Storniolo, Northwestern welcomes back four student-athletes who qualified for last season's NCAA Championships in Frankie Tal-Shahar, Trevor Chumbley, Maxx Mayfield, and Troy Fisher. Tal-Shahar (4th; 141 pounds), Chumbley (4th; 157 pounds), and Mayfield (5th; 157 pounds) all posted podium finishes at the Big Ten Championships, helping the 'Cats to a seventh-place finish.
Mayfield enters the weekend as the top Wildcat in the InterMat Rankings, checking in at No. 9 at 165 pounds. Chumbley sits 12th in the 157-pound rankings, while Tal-Shahar resides at No. 14 at 141 pounds. Fisher is ranked 15th as he prepares for his first season competing at 184 pounds. Evan Bates, who, like Fisher, will move up in class to 197 pounds, finds himself ranked 20th after finishing just one win shy of a trip to the national meet last season.
