EVANSTON, Ill. - For the first time since 1994, Northwestern field hockey is the outright Big Ten regular season champion. With a dominant 5-1 defeat of No. 7 Maryland (14-4, 6-2 B1G), the No. 1 'Cats (16-1, 8-0 B1G) claimed sole possession of the title and will head to the conference tournament as the one seed.
The 'Cats got offense from all directions in their regular season finale, with five different players scoring a goal each. Team leader, Peyton Halsey, notched her 11th of the season, Ilse Tromp tallied her sixth, Alia Marshall grabbed her second and both Lindsey Frank and Regan Cornelius scored their first goals of the season in the rout.
Northwestern's win over the Terrapins secured their first undefeated conference season since 1988 and improved their program-record win streak to 16 straight.
With a first-round bye secured, the 'Cats will open Big Ten Tournament action next Friday in Ann Arbor at noon CT on Big Ten Network. Their opponent is to be determined.
