EVANSTON, Ill. - Lauren Wadas broke a scoreless tie with No. 15 Michigan (6-5, 1-3 B1G) with under six minutes left in the game to give Northwestern field hockey (11-1, 4-0 B1G) their 11th straight win on Sunday at Lakeside Field.
The 'Cats' offense was in control for the majority of the game, outshooting Michigan 5-2 in the first quarter and 10-0 in the second quarter. Northwestern also held a 7-0 advantage in corners during the first half. Despite the lopsided stats, however, the 'Cats failed to find the back of the net before halftime, and the teams entered the break in a 0-0 tie.
The stalemate held through the third quarter as well. With just over five minutes left in regulation, Wadas finally broke through for the 'Cats. On Northwestern's fourteenth corner attempt of the game, she snared a rebound and sent a goal in off the post - her first of the season.
Northwestern's defense held steady for the remainder of the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats took home their 11th straight win by a final score of 1-0. The win streak is their longest since 1990 and is the sixth double-digit streak in program history.
Up next, the 'Cats will face another tough test against the 10-1 Iowa Hawkeyes on the road. Action from Iowa City is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
