Northwestern Erases Five-Run Deficit, Takes Down No. 6 Texas

CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 8 Northwestern erased an 8-3 deficit in the fourth inning to take down the No. 6 Texas Longhorns, 10-9, on Friday as part of a doubleheader to kick off the 2023 season.

 Sydney Supple (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Northwestern (2-0). The left-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on seven hits, allowing one walk and striking out two.

Angela Zedak led the way offensively for the Wildcats, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Kelsey Nader provided a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. all of them coming across on a three-run homer off the bat of Zedak.

The Wildcats lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fourth inning after trailing 8-3. Northwestern managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the score to 8-5 in favor of the Longhorns. Northwestern held the Longhorns off the board before narrowing the gap to 8-7 in the following inning.

The Longhorns expanded their lead to 9-7 before the Northwestern offense got back in action, taking the lead in the sixth. The three-run frame for the Wildcats was punctuated by a two-run single off the bat of Nader, bringing the score to 10-9 in favor of Northwestern. Supple remained in the game in the seventh to secure the final three outs.
