EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 3 Northwestern took down No. 6 Michigan in stunning fashion Friday, winning 1-0 in double overtime on Lauren Wadas' 80th minute goal. The win moved Northwestern to 13-3 with two games left to play in the regular season.
Locked in a 0-0 stalemate for 79 minutes, a shootout looked certain until the Wildcats drew a critical penalty corner. Alia Marshall inserted to Kayla Blas who set up Wadas powerful golden goal. It marked the second overtime winner of Wadas' career, previously doing so to walk-off Ohio State in the 2021 spring season, and her third goal of the season. Blas' assist was her 10th of the season and Marshall's was her seventh.
The strike secured Northwestern's fourth overtime win of the year, the most in the Big Ten, and its fourth win over a top-10 opponent. A different Wildcat has scored the golden goal in each of Northwestern's overtime wins this year as Wadas joins Marshall, Peyton Halsey and Ana Medina Garcia. Northwestern and Michigan have gone to overtime in four straight contests now, and double overtime in the last three with the Wolverines.
Goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz earned her fifth shutout of the season and the 11th of her career, moving her into a tie for sixth most in Northwestern history. Skubisz made six saves while holding the country's ninth best offense scoreless over 80 minutes of game action.
The stunning win capped Northwestern's Senior Day celebration in which eight seniors and fifth-years were honored pregame. The group has been together for arguably the greatest stretch in Northwestern history, winning the team's first national title and securing the program's first-ever No. 1 ranking.
