The 'Cats traveled to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, this past weekend with athletes competing over two days in the 5,000M and the 4x1600M relay.
Eight of the nine 'Cats racing this weekend took to the track on Thursday evening for two competitive heats of the 5,000M. Deepti Choudhury, Ava Earl, Emily Casaclang, Katherine Hessler, Hannah Hall, Olivia Verbeke, and Amanda Mosborg raced in the first heat with Junior Kalea Bartolotto stepping onto the track for the second heat of the evening. Ava Earl won her heat with a personal record of 16:49.71, beating her previous best set two weeks prior at the Bryan Clay Invitational by five seconds. The next two 'Cats each ran within a few strides of each other, with Hannah Hall finishing in 17:03.93 and Olivia Verbeke in 17:05.11. Deepti Choudhury finished crossed the line at 17:09.17. She was followed by Katherine Hessler, Emily Casaclang, and Amanda Mosborg, who ran 17:15.11, 17:16.94, and 17:31.87, respectively. Kalea Bartolotto ran 17:04.30 in a competitive second heat.
On Friday, the 'Cats returned to the track for the 4x1600M relay. First-year Anna Hightower returned to the track for the first time in her Northwestern career to lead-off the team, running a first leg time of 4:58.83. She handed off to fellow first year Ava Earl, fresh off her 5k personal best the night before, who ran the second leg in 4:55.38. The baton then traveled around the track in the hands of Hannah Hall, who ran a 5:02.66 before handing off to Emily Casaclang for the final leg. Emily finished with a 5:06.46, giving the 'Cats a seventh-place finish overall with a total time of 20:03.32
After several competitive weeks on the track, the 'Cats kept the momentum rolling at Drake Relays this past weekend, demonstrating their ability to adapt to conditions and work together in crowded fields. The 'Cats will be back on the track exactly seven days after these races at the Wisconsin Classic in Madison on May 6.
