IOWA CITY, Iowa – Northwestern improved to 6-0 in the Big Ten with a 6-1 win at Iowa on Sunday.
Northwestern, ranked No. 37 in the country, improved to 11-5 overall while dropping the Hawkeyes to 4-13 and 0-6 in the conference.
The Wildcats have started Big Ten play with their longest winning streak since 2018, when they went 11-0.
The 'Cats started quickly and set the tone for the day in doubles with a 6-1 set from Hannah McColgan and Sydney Pratt at No. 3 and a 6-2 set from Briana Crowley and Christina Hand at No. 2. The duo of Clarissa Hand and Maria Shusharina ended their set up 5-3.
Sydney Pratt started singles off with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Samantha Mannix at No. 3.
From there, the usual suspects delivered the early points for a Wildcat clinch. Christina Hand improved her winning streak to six matches in a row with a 6-1, 6-3 2 win over Michelle Bacalla at No. 6. In the last four matches, she has dropped just 13 games in eight sets.
Ema Lazic continued her own impressive from with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Samantha Gillas. It was her third win in her last four matches with her contest at Nebraska ending unfinished after two sets. In all three wins she has dropped three or less games.
With the match at 4-0, Maria Shusharina extended the lead with a solid 6-4, 6-3 win over Barbora Pokorna at No. 2.
Clarissa Hand fought through her contest at No. 1 to pull away from Marisa Schmidt with a decisive third set, winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.
The Wildcats have a split weekend up ahead, visiting No. 8 Ohio State on Friday before hosting Indiana on Sunday. The high on Sunday is currently forecasted at 56 degrees, which could help the Wildcats take on the Hoosiers at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
