EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 25 Northwestern fell to No. 6 Michigan, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats fell to 13-7 and 2-2 in the Big Ten while Michigan improved to 14-2 and 4-0 in conference play.
Despite the 5-2, scoreline the Wildcats were a few points away from a different afternoon, starting with a narrowly missed doubles point. While Steven Forman and Felix Nordby picked up an impressive 6-3 win over the No. 6 duo in the country, No. 2 and No. 3 doubles each went down to wire in tiebreaks, with multiple set points saved by the visitors.
Presley Thieneman earned the first singles win for the Wildcats, 6-2, 7-5 over Jacob Bickersteth, ranked No. 43 in the nation. Bickersteth was was 10-1 on the season before the match and had play most of his matches at the No. 2 or No. 3 position.
Simen Bratholm picked up one of the best wins of the season at No. 2, defeating No. 33 Andrew Fenty 7-6 (12), 7-5, a very tight match that hinged on a marathon first set tiebreak.
The Wildcats fought back from the early setback in doubles across all six courts, with Brian Berdusco and Trice Pickens both winning a set, and Nordby and Forman both battling through tight second sets despite their defeat.
The Wildcats are back in action on the road next week, visiting Wisconsin on Friday and Nebraska on Sunday.
