EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern earned its second sweep in a row at the Combe Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon, besting Maryland 7-0.
The Wildcats improved to 9-5 while keeping their Big Ten and home records perfect at 4-0 and 7-0, respectively. The Terps dropped to 12-3 and 1-2 in the Big Ten.
It was another dominant outing for the 'Cats, but a sterner test from a Terps team with a strong record than the day before. NU took the early lead with solid 6-3 sets from Justine Leong and Christina Hand at No. 3 and Clarissa Hand and Maria Shusharina at No. 1.
Sydney Pratt was well on her way to a win at No. 3 when her opponent retired down 6-0, 2-0. The 'Cats improved their lead to 2-0.
Christina Hand won her fourth match in a row at No. 6, dating back to last Sunday aginst Minnesota, with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 against Kallista Liu.
Ema Lazic also continued her fine form with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4. She claimed her team-high 10th win of the season and dropped only three games total this weekend. She clinched the match at 4-0.
The 'Cats pressed on with the overall result no longer in doubt and saw their next win from Justine Leong at No. 5 with a strong second set in a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
The top of the lineup finished off the sweep against stiff challenges, with Maria Shusharina winning 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 and Clarissa Hand winning 6-4, 6-4 against Selma Cadar.
Northwestern is back in action next weekend with a Midwestr road trip to Nebraska on Friday and Iowa on Sunday.
