To watch all five games through a computer screen was not how I planned to spend opening weekend but sometimes the game asks certain requests of you.
I told Coach Kate as they were leaving last Thursday on the team's travel day, how someday I will look back on my career at Northwestern and remember this time. I may recall hard moments but what I won't forget is the unconditional love my team and the staff filled me with throughout this time. While having to stay behind in Evanston, it provided me with a unique opportunity to watch our team as a spectator.
To be able to see a blend of upperclassmen lead the way and incomers come in and make a statement was special. Rachel Lewis, who came back for her fifth year, blasted a grand slam in game one, sending a message to college softball that they would have to try and pitch to her for another year.
Kendall Peterson stepped up to the plate looking like a veteran hitting a walk-off to win the UConn game early. As for our newcomers, Ayana Lindsey debuted her first collegiate game with 3 hits, 2 steals, and an RBI! It does not get much better than that. Not to mention the new face we have locking down second base, Grace Nieto.
The best part to me was not in what I saw, but in what I could hear through the FloSoftball coverage of the games: our dugout was alive. The cheering, the encouragement, the intensity in every pitch of the game were all there. That is what I cannot wait to be a part of as soon as I step back on the field with my girls.
This weekend will be an exciting one–we have the opportunity to face some great competition across the board. Get ready Cats fans, these moments are what we have all been waiting for!!
Sincerely,
