EVANSTON, Ill. – #24 Northwestern opens the Big Ten season with two road duals this weekend, traveling to #15 Wisconsin on Friday and #14 Minnesota on Sunday. Friday's matchup will begin at 7 p.m. CT, while the 'Cats will take on Minnesota at 1 p.m. CT. Both duals will be broadcast on B1G+.
This is the 25th meeting all time between Northwestern and Minnesota, and the 29th meeting between the 'Cats and Wisconsin. Northwestern defeated #19 Wisconsin last season, 18-17.
Northwestern opened competition during the first weekend of December, placing fourth at the CKLV Invitational in Las Vegas. Ryan Deakin won his third straight CKLV title, going 5-0 on the weekend and defeating three top-15 ranked opponents.
The Wildcats swept a tri-dual with Virginia and SIUE last Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Welsh-Ryan Arena, defeating SIUE, 39-3, and Virginia, 18-16. A pin from Yahya Thomas at 149 and Chris Cannon's 8-7 decision in the final matchup of the dual sealed a tight victory for the Wildcats over Virginia.
Northwestern currently has six wrestlers listed in InterMat's Division I rankings. Ryan Deakin sits at #2 in the 157 class, while Yahya Thomas also sits in a top five at #4 in the 149 section. Redshirt sophomores Chris Cannon and Troy Fisher, sophomore David Ferrante, and senior Michael DeAugustino all rank in the top 33 for their respective weight classes.
