EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern hosts Oregon for the marquee matchup of the nonconference schedule on Tuesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. CT on BTN for the first Wildcat game this season on the network.
The first 800 fans in attendance receive a limited-edition rally towel. Fans are also encouraged to wear black in support of the Wildcats, who will be wearing their Gothic jerseys.
The Wildcats and Ducks were both NCAA Tournament teams in 2021 and could have met in the Sweet 16 if the 'Cats finished their upset of No. 2 seed Louisville. Both programs were regular season conference champions in 2020.
The Wildcats are 7-0 at home this season and riding a five game win streak into the nonconference finale. The Ducks received 13 votes in the AP Top 25 poll for Dec. 13 but lost to a talented Kansas State team on Saturday.
Tuesday also features the reunion of USA Basketball teammates Veronica Burton and Sedona Prince, who played together at the FIBA AmeriCup in the spring in Puerto Rico and won a gold medal.
The Wildcats will be wearing Gothic uniforms, as has become customary in some of their biggest games. In 2019-20 the 'Cats were 4-0 in the uniforms with wins over Maryland, Michigan, Indiana and Michigan State.
Senior guard Veronica Burton nearly finished with a triple-double in the 'Cats' last game, a 68-58 win over Temple. She totaled 12 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds, four steals and committed no turnovers or personal fouls. It was the third double-double of her career and second with points and assists.
Courtney Shaw also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. It was just the third game in the last five seasons in which two Wildcats both recorded double-doubles and first game since February 2021 when Burton and Lindsey Pulliam did so.
Burton leads the Big Ten in steals per game (3.7), assist-to-turnover ratio (2.84) and free throws made (72). She ranks second in the entire country in win shares (5.2) per Her Hoop Stats.
The 'Cats are 1-1 all-time against Oregon, splitting a home and home in 1989 and 1991. The 1989-90 Wildcats defeated Oregon and went on to win a Big Ten Championship, a feat that was not repeated until 2019-20.
