Two Wildcats Win Their Brackets at Michigan State Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Northwestern sent 11 wrestlers to the Michigan State Open over the weekend, posting a combined 34-13 record at the competition. Two Wildcats won their weight brackets, with Troy Fisher taking the 174-pound title and Lucas Davison winning the heavyweight division.

Fisher won all four of his matches, including a 16-7 major decision over No. 34 Anthony Mantanona (Oklahoma) in the finals. It marked the first time in his career that the redshirt sophomore finished first at a collegiate tournament.

No. 5 Davison likewise dominated the competition, going 4-0 at the tournament with decisions over two top-25 wrestlers in Josh Heindelsman (Oklahoma) and Luke Luffman (Illinois). His emphatic finals match resulted in a 13-3 major decision over No. 70 Terrese Aaron. His brother, Andrew Davison, also compiled an impressive showing in East Lansing with a 4-1 record.

The Wildcats also touted two second-place finishers in Trevor Chumbley (157) and David Ferrante (165). Ferrante posted three major decisions and a fall, while Chumbley recorded a decision and major decision of his own.

Chicago's Big Ten Team comes home for its first dual match of the season this Saturday at 6 p.m. against SIUE. It begins Big Ten dual meets early next year, with the first on the road at Wisconsin on January 7.
