ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin islands – Northwestern opened the Paradise Jam tournament with a 73-57 victory over a pesky South Dakota team on Thanksgiving at the University of the Virgin Islands.
The Wildcats improved to 4-1 on the season with a win over the Summit League favorites. South Dakota made the 2021 NCAA Tournament as an 11 seed.
First year forward Caileigh Walsh enjoyed a breakout performance of her young career with 20 points on 9-15 shooting along with five rebounds in just 25 minutes.
Graduate guard Lauryn Satterwhite put together a career evening, getting the start in place of the injured Sydney Wood. Satterwhite scored a career-high 15 points on 5-7 shooting including a 4-5 mark from deep.
Senior guard Veronica Burton impacted the game in nearly every facet and finished with a traditionally well-rounded statline: 19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, four assists as well as drawing seven fouls.
Senior forward Courtney Shaw capped off a four-pronged attack for the Wildcats with her third double-double in five games this season, contributing 12 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks with a physically imposing game in the frontcourt.
Both teams shot over 40% from three, but the Wildcats did their damage in the paint, outscoring the Coyotes 32-14 and racking up 19 fast break points.
