'Cats Down Michigan State On Senior Day

EVANSTON, Ill. – On Senior Day at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, Northwestern defeated Michigan State by a score of 3-1. The 'Cats finish their first regular season under head coach Russell Payne at 6-8-2, 3-5-0 in conference play.
 
Northwestern went up early on Justin Weiss's seventh goal of the season, thanks to assists from Vicente Castro and Jose Del Valle. Michigan State responded five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1, and the score stayed tied into half time. 
 
After a scramble in front of net in the 49th minute, graduate student Spencer Farina netted his third-career goal in his final game in Evanston. Farina's goal was assisted by senior Richie Bennett and Vicente Castro, who's seventh assist moved into a tie for the Big Ten lead.
 
Justin Weiss headed in his eighth goal in the 54th minute from a Jose Del Valle cross, giving the 'Cats a comfortable 3-1 lead. Bardia Kimiavi was also credited with an assist on the goal. Weiss's eighth goal moved him into a tie for the conference lead. 
 
With the win, the 'Cats earned the seven-seed in the Big Ten Tournament and are lined up for a road contest at second-seeded Maryland in the first round next Sunday, Nov. 7.
