EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern's Brooke Riley of the women's golf program and Jesse Brown of the football program have been recognized by the Big Ten as Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2020-21 academic year, the conference announced on Wednesday.
The pair was chosen from a group of more than 350 exemplary student-athletes who displayed positive sportsmanship throughout the year. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Riley recently concluded a five-year career with Northwestern's women's golf program, during which the Wildcats secured an NCAA Regional appearance in every season. A four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Riley also earned All-Big Ten recognition twice throughout her career, taking home second team honors in 2019-20 as well as first-team honors and a GolfWeek Honorable Mention All-American selection as a junior in 2018-19.
During her All-American campaign, Riley claimed an individual first place finish at the 2019 Silverado Showdown and shot a women's course-record 65 in the final round of the 2019 NCAA West Regional at Tumble Creek Golf club, the second-lowest score in program history, to help advance the Wildcats to the 2019 NCAA Championships.
This past spring, Riley received her second-straight invitation as one of 82 players to play at the prestigious Augusta National Women's Amateur event, in which she earned a Top-30 finish.
Brown overcame a myriad of injuries throughout his five-year career in Evanston. The Lilburn, Ga, native appeared in 24 games and scored four total touchdowns, including rushing for a career-high two touchdowns in a 21-20 comeback victory at Iowa on October 31.
This past fall, Dan and Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald awarded Brown the No. 1 jersey, used to recognize the student-athlete who truly embodies the values and character of the Northwestern football family, to wear during the 2020 season in which the Wildcats captured their second Big Ten West title in three seasons and finished the season ranked No. 10 in the nation.
A four-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient, Brown was named as one of 12 Northwestern representatives to the 2021 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers.
