PISCATAWAY, NJ. – The 'Cats dropped their second match against No. 10 Rutgers in overtime, 3-2.
Bente Baekers opened things up for the Wildcats with a goal in the first three minutes off an assist from Shannon Daley and Kayla Blas. Northwestern was able to hold Rutgers back for the first period and most of the second, limiting them to just two shots. However, one of those two shots found the goal at the end of the second quarter to tie things up.
Rutgers fired off two shots in the third period, the most in any quarter for the Scarlet Knights, and managed to send the second shot into the goal at the end of the quarter. Ana Medina Garcia responded immediately in the fourth period, finishing off her own rebound and sending the game into overtime.
Unfortunately the Scarlet Knights were able to stifle the Northwestern attack quickly and send home the golden goal to take the win off the 'Cats.
Northwestern will return home on Thursday after a short road trip to face No. 2 Iowa. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the Lakeside Field.
