'Cats Exit Big Ten Tournament After Heartbreaking Loss

MADISON, Wisc. – The Wildcats' Big Ten Tournament run came to a heartbreaking end in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Northwestern fell to No. 1 seed Wisconsin in penalty kicks after the score was locked at 1-1 through overtime. The 'Cats now await word on if they will play in the NCAA Tournament and continue their season.

Sophomore Lily Gilbertson scored the Wildcats' lone goal to take the lead in the 37th minute, her second-career goal.

The Badgers tied the game up in the 57th minute and the teams could not break the deadlock during regulation or overtime.

Goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood held Wisconsin to one goal in 110 minutes of play, saving two shots.

Regan Steigleder and Rowan Lapi both converted from the spot in penalty kicks, but the 'Cats fell 4-2 in the shootout.

If this is the end of the season for the 'Cats, it is their sixth season with a .500 record or better in the past seven years.

Seniors Regan Steigleder, Kayleigh Stahlschmidt, Nia Harris, Madi Kennel and Kylie Fisher will all graduate this year after four successful seasons on the Northwestern squad.
