MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After taking the first of two games at US Bank Stadium in a weekend series against Minnesota, the Wildcats fell short of a series sweep in a 7-3 setback on Monday afternoon.
The Gophers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two frames of action, but the 'Cats came roaring back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Michael Trautwein evened the score with a two-run opposite field blast to left field. It marked the second-straight game in which Trautwein homered, as well as his third long ball of the season.
Later in the fifth inning, Evan Minarovic drove in Vincent Bianchina via an RBI-double to right-center to give the Wildcats a 5-3 lead. Minarovic led the way for the Wildcats with two hits on the afternoon, his second multi-hit effort on the year.
Minnesota rallied with two runs in the sixth inning, and three runs in the eighth inning en route to a 7-3 victory.
Northwestern returns to action on Friday, March 26 to begin a three-game series downstate at Illinois. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 4:05 pm CT.
