VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Northwestern returned to the turf on Friday afternoon and suffered its first setback of the season in a narrow 2-1 setback to the Penn State Nittany Lions in a shootout.
The Wildcats outshot Penn State 24-18 in 80 minutes of game action, including a 21-6 advantage after the first half. The 'Cats also had nine penalty corner attempts on the afternoon.
First-year goalie Annabel Skubisz made her second-career start and turned in a phenomenal showing in net, recording seven saves while allowing just one goal in 80 minutes of action.
After a scoreless first period of action, the Wildcats struck first in the second period when Sabrina Solomen scored on a shot from five yards out on an assist from Bente Baekers. It marked the first-career goal for Solomen and already the fourth assist of the season for Baekers.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, March 7 for a rematch against the Maryland Terrapins at 9:30 am CT. In their last meeting on Feb. 28, the Wildcats scored two second half goals en route to a 2-1 takedown, their first victory over Maryland since 2017.
