MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Northwestern struck first at Minnesota on Thursday but dropped an overtime 2-1 result to the Gophers.
The Wildcats moved to 2-2 on the season. Sophomore Rowan Lapi scored the Wildcats' goal in the last minute of the first half on a one-time curler to cap off another well worked set piece for the team. Sophomore Marianna Annest picked up the assist.
The goal was Lapi's second of her career after last scoring on Aug. 29, 2019 against William and Mary. Lapi only played in five games in her first-year campaign due to injury, and returned to the scorer's sheet with her first shot of the 2021 season.
Annest picked up her team-best second assist of the season in 50 minutes of action as a substitute.
Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood made three saves including a crucial point-blank reflex stop with 14 minutes to go in regulation to keep the game tied.
Despite the two goals conceded, Northwestern's backline of Hallie Pearson, Danika Austin, Ella Hase and Chloe McGhee, kept Minnesota at bay with shot blocks and deflections in the box all afternoon, allowing just five shots on goal on 20 shots total.
Northwestern heads to Iowa for a Monday contest at 11 a.m. CT.
