LINCOLN, Neb. –– No. 8 Northwestern opened its Big Ten campaign with a 4-3 win at Nebraska for its third straight victory.
The Wildcats improved to 5-1 on the season.
Julie Byrne, Clarissa Hand and Hannah McColgan all secured wins in singles while the doubles point came from wins from the duos of Byrne/McColgan and Hand/Maria Shusharina.
Byrne, ranked No. 57 in the country, dispatched Claire Reifeis, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. McColgan coasted to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hayley Hakkenstad at No. 6 singles.
With the doubles point and wins at Nos. 2 and 6, the 'Cats needed a clincher and Hand stepped up in a three set comeback featuring a clutch second set tiebreak to win 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
The 'Cats continue their road trip on Sunday when they face Iowa. The match is set for noon.
