'Cats Pick Up Wins in Big Ten Match Play

PALM COAST, Fla. -- Varun Chopra, John Driscoll III and Eric McIntosh each came away with two individual wins in Big Ten Match Play this weekend.

After receiving the first seed in the tournament, Northwestern played Minnesota in an unscored game during the bye before moving on to face Michigan State in the second round. The 'Cats tied the Spartans as Chopra and McIntosh secured their first official wins of the season, beating their opponents 4&3 and 2&1, respectively.

Northwestern thoroughly defeated its next opponent, the three seed Purdue, 4-1 with individual wins from James Imai, Chris Zhang, Chopra and McIntosh. The Wildcats' victory over the Boilermakers tied for the largest team win of the tournament.

McIntosh and Driscoll picked up two more individual wins for Northwestern in the final round against Penn State with McIntosh defeating his opponent 3&1 and Driscoll winning 2&1. The overall 3-2 loss to the Nittany Lions brought Northwestern to a sixth-place finish in Big Ten Match Play.

Chicago's Big Ten will next hit the greens Feb. 15-17 in La Quinta, California to play in The Prestige at PGA West.
