Supported by Northwestern Medicine, Northwestern Athletics will spotlight a 'Community Group of the Game' during each week of a home basketball game.
In this week's spotlight, the athletic department recognizes Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, a nationally-ranked innovative research hospital focused on rehabilitation in downtown Chicago. The hospital specializes in the most complex conditions including spinal cord, injury, stroke and traumatic brain injury to the more common conditions such as arthritis, chronic pain and sports injuries.
The athletic department has a strong partnership with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Every year student-athletes make it a priority to visit the hospital to interact with patients and families, with women's basketball and volleyball being the most recent teams to visit. Through the hospital's Adaptive Sports Program, patients also regularly attend Northwestern men's basketball games to cheer on the Wildcats and participate in a halftime wheelchair basketball scrimmage. Further, the department has hosted several patients and families at both men's basketball and football games, as part of the Community Group of the Game initiative. Under normal circumstances, this initiative helps local organizations in the Evanston and Chicago communities receive an exclusive game-day experience by providing groups with admission to the game, a meal voucher and airtime on the jumbotron as the featured group of the game.
