Evanston, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Julie Byrne has been recognized as Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week. This is the first time Byrne has received this honor this season, and the second time in her career.
This recognition comes after Byrne posted a 2-0 record that helped clinch the Wildcats' victory over No. 18 Baylor. This was the Bear's first loss of the season.
In singles play, Byrne held her opponent Mel Kyrwoj to under 4 points before claiming the No. 1 spot victory (6-2, 6-4). Byrne teamed up with sophomore Hannah McColgan to topple opponents Krywoj and Herrero Linana 6-3, ending the Baylor doubles pair's undefeated season.
Byrne is ranked No. 58 in Singles on the Oracle ITA rankings, improving five places since the beginning of the month. She has tallied seven overall wins this season, winning her last two double matches.
The Ireland native is the first Wildcat to win Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors this season. She has also earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition as a Communications Studies major.
The Wildcats will return home on Friday to host the Indiana Hoosiers at the Combe Tennis Center. Matches are set to start at 5 p.m. CT.
