RIO GRANDE, PR US — First year Irene Kim claimed a share of the 36-hole lead and sophomore Kelly Sim made her way up the leaderboard in the second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic Monday.
The duo combined to shoot 4-under and sophomore Kelly Su posted a 2-over, 74, as the 'Cats shot just 4-over as a team in the second round and moved within five shots of the team lead held by No. 32 Texas Tech. The 'Cats are tied with fellow Big Ten foe Purdue in fourth at 8-over, while the Red Raiders lead the field at 3-over.
Kim shot under par for the second-straight day, firing a 1-under, 71, behind three birdies and 13 pars. She made a birdie on No. 4 — her first hole of the day — and capped her round on No. 3 with her third of the day to move into a tie with Virginia Tech's Alyssa Montgomery heading into the final day.
While Kim continued her steady play, it was Sim who lit up the scoreboard in round two with a 3-under, 69, behind an impressive back nine. Sim made three birdies and an eagle to shoot 5-under, 31, on the back. The barrage of scoring made up for a pair of bogeys on the front to help her post her second round in the 60s this season.
