PALM COAST, Fla. - The Northwestern Wildcats opened their spring season with a bang as they clinched the 2020 Big Ten Match Play title in a match tiebreaker over Penn State.
Top-seeded NU defeated Nebraska in the semifinal match, 4-2-1 to advance to the Championship round to face the Nittany Lions. After an 18-hole battle, the match resulted in a tie. The Wildcats dug deep and posted three points to claim their fifth Big Ten Match Play Championship. Northwestern has won the Big Ten Match Play title a league-best five times.
Senior Everton Hawkins and first year James Imai went a perfect 4-0 at Hammock Beach Resort.
The 2020 Big Ten Match Play tournament will be aired on Big Ten Network on March 1.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will head to Palm Springs, CA. for the 20th Annual Prestige at PGA West on Feb. 17-19.
