EAST LANSING, Mich. – One week away from the team's first dual meet of the season at Virginia Tech, Northwestern Wrestling had five first-years wrestling unattached at the Michigan State Open. The five Wildcats turned in promising results as each wrestler came away with at least one win, with first-year Chris Cannon claiming the 125 lb Freshman/Sophomore division, while first-year Trevor Chumbley (149) placed fourth in the 149 open division.
"Our redshirts came to compete this past weekend," Head Coach Matt Storniolo said following the tournament. "I am proud of the results they posted, but even more proud of the way they attacked their first collegiate tournament. This gives each of them something to build off of as we get deeper in the season."
Cannon went 4-0 on the tournament and capped off an impressive run with a 4-2 victory over Pittsburgh's Louis Newell in the First Place match.
Wrestling in the open division of the 149 lb class, Chumbley claimed two major decisions and one additional decision on his way to the third place match before having to take a no contest due to the amount of matches he had wrestled in that day.
Also placing in the 165 lb Freshman/Sophomore division was first-year Ankhaa Enkhmandakh, who claimed two decisions over Ohio wrestlers, John Williams and Kamal Adewumi.
First-year Justin Benjamin went 2-2 on the tournament in the 133 lb class, including claiming an 11-0 major decision over Illinois' Nate Cotroneo and a 9-4 decision over Purdue's Michael Leveille. First-year Jon Halvorsen also claimed a 5-2 decision over Oklahoma's Carson Berryhill in the 184 lb class.
Northwestern will kick off its regular season this Sunday, November 10 at noon when it travels to Virginia Tech for the Hokies "Mat on the Mound" showdown taking place at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
